European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
